Finding Her Shade: The Sigourney Cantelo Edit
Design Feature
Shade is the new self-care.
When beauty journalist and Beauticate founder Sigourney Cantelo renovated her pool on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, she approached the space the same way she edits a skincare routine: start with the hero piece.
The result is a Mediterranean-inspired retreat anchored by the Jardin Patio Umbrella, a sculptural focal point that transforms high-glare summer sun into something softer, slower, and far more inviting.
1. Start With the Feeling
For Sigourney, the design process began long before furniture entered the scene. She started with a mood: European summer meets relaxed coastal living. Think sun-warmed stone, olive trees, curved architecture, and long afternoons that effortlessly drift into evening.
The pool renovation already carried strong architectural lines, an arched bench seat, layered landscaping, and soft Mediterranean cues. What the space needed was a defining element. A piece that would pull everything together.
That piece became the Jardin Patio Umbrella in Alpine Green.
With its scalloped valance and refined silhouette, the umbrella introduced softness without losing structure. It was nostalgic, but modern. Playful, yet architectural. Once in place, the rest of the space aligned around it.
"I didn’t want our pool to feel like a suburban add-on. I wanted it to feel transportive."
2. The Umbrella as Architectural Crown
Many people view an umbrella as purely functional, something brought out for shade and packed away at sunset. Sigourney saw it differently.
An umbrella, particularly one with presence and proportion, draws the eye upward. It frames the pool, defines a zone, and introduces vertical balance in what could otherwise feel like an exposed horizontal space.
In Canada, this design logic translates seamlessly. Whether on a lakefront deck or an urban terrace, the right umbrella acts as an outdoor “ceiling”, creating intimacy while preserving openness.
Beyond aesthetics, there was a practical dimension. As someone deeply aware of long-term UV exposure, proper shade was non-negotiable. Protection and beauty were not separate goals. They were part of the same decision.
3. Designing for Real Life
A beautiful outdoor space must function under real conditions. Busy households, guests arriving unannounced, sunscreen on hands, wet towels, shifting furniture, none of it can feel fragile.
The umbrella needed to be durable, stable, and effortless to live with. Performance fabric, strong internal structure, and proper base weight ensure it can withstand everyday use without feeling precious.
This balance between resilience and refinement is what makes a hero piece successful. It does not demand attention, it earns it.
4. The Art of the Edit
Like any well-curated interior, outdoor design benefits from restraint. Once the Alpine Green palette was established, the rest of the styling echoed that tone through subtle repetition rather than clutter.
A timber lounger introduced warmth against cooler stone. Green accents reinforced cohesion. Every addition served a purpose.
The result feels composed. Calm. More boutique hotel than backyard barbecue.
5. Shade as Self-Care
Perhaps the most meaningful transformation was behavioural. What was once a high-glare, short-stay zone became a true outdoor living room.
With proper shade, the family lingered longer. Lunch by the pool became comfortable. Conversations extended into late afternoon. The space invited stillness.
In both Australia and Canada, where summer sun can be intense, shade is not simply about comfort. It is about longevity — of materials, of skin, and of the rituals we build outdoors.
Good shade doesn’t just protect. It changes how you live.
